This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out and talk about why the 2002 box office smash hit, Scooby-Doo, Should’ve Been Gay. If you, like us, are a gay of a certain age, this live action version of the classic cartoon has lived rent free in your head ever since you first laid eyes on Linda Cardellini as Velma.
The Mystery Incorporated polycule has been wrecking villains’ plans since 1969! Every iteration of Scooby-Doo from that very first cartoon onward has gotten gayer and gayer– to the point that Velma is canonically a lesbian in 2022’s Trick or Treat, Scooby-Doo. And we would have had gay Velma on our screens much, much earlier if it hadn’t been for those meddling homophobes in Hollywood #releasethekiss. The fact that a kiss between Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Daphne and Linda Cardellini’s Velma was filmed and then hidden from us for 24 years is a hate crime against the queer community. We have never recovered. We may never recover. We ride at dawn.
We know one thing for sure, Scooby-Doo Should’ve Been Gay.
